Careers and Apprenticeships Fair inspires local young people

YOUNG PEOPLE had the chance to get a taste of their future careers and speak to the experts at this year’s Tameside Careers & Apprenticeships Fair.

The event, organised by Tameside Council’s Employment & Skills team, on Thursday 23 June, saw over 1,200 year 9 and 10 pupils head to Stalybridge Civic Hall where they were introduced to options for further education and apprenticeships.

The young people came from schools across the borough and received information, demonstrations and guidance from local employers, training providers and local colleges.  Tameside College and Ashton Sixth Form College showcased the wide range of further education options available locally, and also sponsored the event.

Pupils were also able to engage with a variety of businesses from different sectors  including Whitecroft Lighting, RSK (Envirolab), NHS, North West Ambulance Service and the Armed Forces.

To get a feel for their future options, demonstrations were hands-on, ranging from brick laying, to playing musical instruments, and even taking part in the making of a film. The catering and hospitality team from Tameside College produced around 800 fresh pancakes and gave pupils the chance to try cupcake decorating, with the bonus of eating your cake afterwards!

Cllr Dave Sweeton, Tameside Council executive member for Business and Employment, said: “Through our careers & apprenticeship fair, young people get the opportunity to speak with experts from a variety of business sectors and get an idea of which industries interest them. We always have an impressive selection of demonstrations they can carry out and this year was no different, so I want to thank everyone involved for putting in so much time and effort.”
